Overview
Built on new science
Burnout is now at unprecedented levels worldwide, costing the Australian economy $66.3 billion each year. Over 70% of Australian workers are currently experiencing burnout or burnout symptoms, and 40% of the increase in workplace psychological injury claims are directly linked to it.
Temporary fixes like taking a break and motivational advice don’t solve burnout. Structured, evidence-based strategies do. Those strategies have been fundamentally transformed by new science that has changed everything we know about what burnout actually is, how to accurately identify it, and how to recover from it fully.
The Burnout to Balance Masterclass is built on that new science — specifically the Sydney Studies, led by Professor Gordon Parker, which have redefined what burnout is, who it affects and how to accurately identify it.
The Institute of EI difference
There is no comparable program in Australia. This is the most comprehensive, evidence-based burnout program available.

Six live, interactive sessions with Mel Neil
Over six weeks, you will be guided through the root causes of burnout, the evidence-based strategies that address them and the practical steps to restore balance and build lasting resilience. Every session is live and interactive — not pre-recorded — draws on the latest EI science, and is designed for immediate real-world application.
Four validated assessments
Using four research-validated assessments, including the Sydney Burnout Measure — the most significant advancement in burnout science in decades — you'll gain clear insight into your personal signs, symptoms and risk factors for burnout. This data-driven approach ensures your strategies are tailored specifically to you. Not a generic framework.
Two personalised action plans
You'll develop two personalised action plans. One to address current burnout and ensure you fully recover. Then one to make sure it never features in your future. Practical, implementable and designed to fit into your life and work — not sit in a drawer.
One-on-one coaching session
After completing the masterclass, you'll receive a private one-on-one coaching session with a certified EI Development specialist to interpret your assessment results, work through individual challenges, and ensure your strategies are realistic, sustainable and built to last.

The EI lens
Grounded in science. Built for real life.
At The Institute of EI, we approach burnout through the lens of emotional intelligence — the foundational human capability that determines how we manage ourselves under pressure, regulate our responses and recover from the demands that modern life places on us.
Low EI is an empirically recognised predisposition to burnout. Building EI is not a soft skill exercise.
It is evidence-based, measurable capability development, and the missing piece in most burnout programs.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions
How do I know if this course is right for me?
This masterclass is for anyone experiencing burnout, recovering from it, or concerned they are at risk. You don’t need a clinical diagnosis to enrol. If you are feeling chronically depleted, disengaged or unable to recover no matter how much rest you get, this program will give you clarity and a structured path forward.
I've tried other programs and they didn't help. Why would this be different?
Most burnout programs are built on outdated science. The strategies they teach were designed for a flawed definition of burnout, which is why they often provide short-term relief but not lasting recovery. Our course uses the Sydney Burnout Measure and an EI framework to address root cause, not surface symptoms. The 6-week brain-friendly structure ensures sustainable and lasting behaviour change.
Can my employer cover the cost?
Many participants have this program covered or partially covered through their employer’s learning and development budget, employee wellbeing fund or professional development allowance. We recommend speaking with your HR or people team. We can provide a tax invoice and program outline to support your request.
What if I miss a session?
Each live session is recorded and made available to enrolled participants. We recommend attending live wherever possible — the interaction is a significant part of the program’s value — but recordings are available if needed.
Can my organisation enrol multiple people?
Yes. We can also deliver this program in person at your organisation or as a private live cohort for your team. Contact us directly for a proposal.
What is the difference between burnout and stress?
Stress is typically characterised by too much pressure, demands, and overwhelm. Burnout is characterised by too little — a depletion of energy, motivation and sense of purpose that doesn’t resolve with rest alone. They can coexist, but they require different strategies. One of the first things you’ll do in this program is complete the Sydney Burnout Measure, which accurately distinguishes burnout from stress, anxiety and depression.
What do I need to participate?
A stable internet connection, a device with audio and video, and 90 minutes per session across six weeks. All assessment tools and program materials are provided digitally on enrolment.
