1. Purpose
This Assessment Policy sets out the principles, procedures, and responsibilities governing the design, delivery, and review of assessment at The Institute of EI ([INSERT RTO CODE]). It ensures all assessments are conducted fairly, consistently, and in compliance with the 2025 Standards for Registered Training Organisations.
2. Principles of Assessment

Validity | Assessment tasks accurately measure the required knowledge, skills, and performance evidence specified in the relevant training package or course. |
Reliability | Assessment processes produce consistent outcomes across different assessors, contexts, and occasions. |
Flexibility | Assessment accommodates the diverse needs and circumstances of students, including through reasonable adjustment where appropriate. |
Fairness | Assessment is free from bias and discrimination. Students are given clear information about requirements and have the opportunity to demonstrate competence. |
3. Rules of Evidence
Evidence gathered during assessment must be:
- Valid — directly related to the unit of competency or course learning outcomes being assessed
- Sufficient — enough evidence is collected to make a confident judgement of competence
- Authentic — the evidence is the student’s own work
- Current — the evidence reflects the student’s present skills and knowledge
4. Assessment Methods
The Institute uses a range of assessment methods appropriate to the course and learning outcomes, which may include:
- Written questions and responses
- Assignments and reports
- Case studies and scenario-based tasks
- Projects and portfolios
- Oral questioning
- Observation of practical tasks (where applicable)

5. Assessment Outcomes
For accredited courses, assessment outcomes are recorded as:
- Competent (C) — the student has demonstrated the required competency
- Not Yet Competent (NYC) — the student has not yet demonstrated the required competency
For non-accredited courses, outcomes are recorded as Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (NS).
Students are notified of their assessment outcome within [INSERT — e.g. 10 business days] of submission.
6. Resubmission
Where a student receives a Not Yet Competent or Not Satisfactory result, they are entitled to one resubmission at no additional cost, provided it is submitted within [INSERT — e.g. 10 business days] of receiving feedback. Further resubmissions may be approved at the Institute’s discretion and may incur a fee per the Fee Schedule.
7. Reasonable Adjustment
The Institute will make reasonable adjustments to assessment methods and conditions to ensure students with disability or other identified needs are not disadvantaged, provided the integrity of the assessment is maintained. Students should notify the Institute of support needs prior to enrolment where possible.
8. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Students may apply for RPL prior to course commencement. The RPL process involves: submission of an application, self-assessment against unit(s) of competency, submission of evidence, assessor review, and written notification of outcome. RPL assessment fees apply per the Fee Schedule.
9. Credit Transfer
Students who hold a current and relevant qualification or statement of attainment may be eligible for credit transfer. Applications must be submitted with certified supporting documentation prior to course commencement and are processed at no charge.
10. Assessment Records
All assessment records are stored securely and retained for a minimum of five years. Students may request access to their records at any time.
11. Assessment Appeals
Students who disagree with an assessment outcome may lodge an appeal within 20 business days of receiving the outcome. The full process is set out in the Complaints & Appeals Policy.
12. Assessor Qualifications
All trainers and assessors hold the qualifications and current industry experience required under the 2025 Standards for RTOs and the Institute’s Credential Policy.
13. Validation
The Institute conducts regular validation of assessment tools and practices to ensure ongoing compliance with the Standards and currency with industry requirements. Validation records are maintained and available to ASQA upon request.
14. Review
This Assessment Policy is reviewed annually or following any significant regulatory change. Last reviewed: April 2026. Next review: April 2027.
